It’s that time of year to review your budget and take care of your finances. This includes maximizing any benefits that come to a close on December 31. One of the most overlooked perks is using all of the money accrued in flex spending accounts. Too many times, dollars are left unused in accounts and forfeited to your employer plan. This is your money- be sure to use it. If you are not sure what qualifies, consider the IRS rule that states: anything “medical” defined as amounts paid for diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body. Use your dollars toward prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, prescription / non-prescription reading glasses, contact lenses, routine exams. Also eligible are eyeglass and lens accessories such as microfiber lens cleaning cloths, and lens cases. Spending more than your current balance is allowed as long as the total contributions by the end of the year are enough to cover the expenditure. Whether you get paid, weekly, biweekly or monthly, time is running out. For complete plan details it is best to check with your employer.
